The California sun is the enjoyable one. I think over the years the board has modified to reflect the changing times. It still has a vintage feel, but rides have been updated. I am sure Coke has long been a sponsor of Disneyland.

When I was growing up this was one of my favorite advertisements ever. This is my last Disneyland post of sunshine. I love how happy and radiating with excitement this sun is. One can almost hear the sun making some giggle. Did you just love this one too?

Dear Heavens, this must have been at one of the shops, but it shows how the "sun wheel" looked before they put the face of Mickey on it. I don't know about you, but I love it with the sun more than with Mickey. Then again I really like the old feel of the image. What about you?

Paradise Pier Sun

Paradise Pier Sun, and wow it was sunny the days we were there. The pier has the ticket line for the Roller Coasters, and a few other rides as well as shopping. Disney Land is full of sun shining from all over. I am sure that there were some that I did not find. You will have to make the trip yourself to find any additional ones that I may have missed.

Playhouse Disney Sun

At Playhouse Disney there is sun above it all. The middle of the sun is blue, not really sure why. I do know that my children loved Playhouse Disney when they were younger. My daughter really loved the Wiggles. Since my children are so much older now I don't know any of the shows that are on these days.

Tower that has us float down. I can't remember the actual ride that this one belongs to, but I do know that the kids and I did ride most of all the rides in Adventure Land. We spent 14 days at the park so we could ride and re ride all the rides, and see the shows. Although it was great to spend so many days there last time. I am not sure I would do it again for so long. We did have such a great time!

This is one of my favorites. I loved seeing the sun with the sunglasses. I think this one was on the pier at Adventure Land. The sun is happy since it is a California sun. LOL

Mickey and The Sun

Before we went to Disneyland we saw this ferris wheel with out the Mickey head. I am not sure when they added it. There are swinging cars that swing and those that are stable. We did ride this one, but we did take a ride on this one. My daughter would only ride the stable ones, and I am glad she choose that one. She had to look down the entire time we went around.

Even the eyes are suns. I think this is more like a "Day Glow" sun, instead of one that should be the sun over the Native Americans. This ride was probably from the 1950's, so times were different.

An ancient stone from Egypt depicts the sun with a square hole in the center. The center hole is an indications "The Eye of God". I have taken photos of the sky, and see how the ancient people would think that a God is looking down on them.

These are pendants and pins. Both are the sun, and are from Italy. Th one on the right has been to my jeweler. I had a smaller diamond taken out, and the 1/2 carat diamond from my engagement ring set in it. The one with the opal has not made the trip to the jeweler. I will have the original diamond from the first one set in this one.

One is mine and the other one is for my daughter. I try to find vintage sun pins and pendants to collect. Once we actually have our ranch, and the museum I would love to have some jewelers offer pieces that are related to things at the ranch and the museum. The museum will be all about Italian culture and the influence it has in America.

We thought having an ag-tour museum would be great for us and our community. We do not have our ranch as of yet, but if you want to see our progress go to my blog Terra Del Sole.

This is the Phaistos Disk. These writings have not been deciphered. The disk on the right has what I believe to be a sun image right in the center. There are many civilizations that have a flower and a wheel as the symbol of the sun. There are so many symbols of the sun...some even include an eye, heart, triangle.etc.

Etruscan Sun God

This is Usil, and the name has not been agreed upon. The language of the Etruscan has not been deciphered, so Usil may be the name or it may not. So what do we know about the artifact.

He has wings on his heels like Mercury. He is running over the water. Do you see the waves. He is one an ionic column, but I am not sure why. I think if this was a part of someone's home they may have sought to align themselves with a God. Many aristocratic or upper class people would align themselves with the Gods for more power. He also has wings. They look like they may have been the ones Icarus used. I hope he knows what happened to him.

He is an interesting God non the less. I have seen other Sun Gods with barges, but wings and wings on the heels. I think that this is a real clue about the Etruscans. I think they originally came from somewhere else. Maybe Crete? Their art has influences from Assyria and Egypt. The flight over the sea of waves, it must have been a long trip to their destination. Their main God is not in a barge or on wheels...he has wings and he is flying over waves.

These signs are read from the bottom to the top. You are going to be floored when I tell you what it is. The bottom part with the two swirls crossing is "Ma" She is represents the supreme fire...She is the Goddess of fire.

The eye (you can see it right?) is named "Tara" The God of Sun and Thunder.

The two horns sticking out represent rays of the sun, bull horns, and arrows.

The overall symbolism is from the cult of the sun, fire, home, and hearth. Symbolism of cattle, wealth, life and death in also included. The bull is so prevalent in ancient times because it represents fertility. I think you could probably guess why it would have that associated with it.

I have special permission to utilize this painting from my friend Robin Ann at Insights and Belly Laughs. She does so many beautiful paintings. I really love this for the sun, and the colorful flowers. Even the centers of the flowers give hints of ancient symbolism of the sun. This image is from Kiva's American Indian Symbol. This is the sun, made with feathers. This symbol was bestowed on those of honor, and during special occasions. Sometimes it is found in the center of a headdress. The feathers make up the circle. A square in the center usually refers to the number four...like the seasons, and the directions.

Danu

This is Danu, and she is the Goddess of all living things. You see her sun pendant around here neck, and the swirls in her pan. The swirls are a sign of the sun, but also of the water. She was an original Goddess throughout Europe and India. On her back are three phases of the moon. She is light, and dark, earth, air and water. Then Danube River gets it's name from Danu.

I think this image is interesting. We have the Pope in the center with the orb and keys to heaven in his left hand. In his right hand is his staff with three crosses on top to symbolize the other two men that were put to death at the same time as Jesus. In the right hand corner is a messenger. He appears to be blowing his horn, and about to write a message. On the left is the sun. The sun has a face, but not a happy look. I wonder what the message was to the Pope.

This is a sun image my son made from copper. Designs and patterns were the subject that we were learning about in this art class. The sun in the center of a diamond, and the eyes have swirls. The swirls are repeated again all along the border. He gave this to me as a present.

Moderen with a Sumerian Look

UGH! I don't remember where I got this from, but I am sure somewhere from Goggle images. It has a Sumerian look to it. I am sure the person that made it had some knowledge of history and old images of the sun. Even around the borders the swirls are representative of the sun in ancient times. I don't even want to tell you what the middle area reminds me of that is non art related. (Must be the wine).

2nd Chumash Sun

Here is my second sun representation of the sun. This was made by the Chumash Indians. They were the first known inhabitants of the coastal region of California. The food was plentiful for the people, and the Chumash lived as far south as Santa Barbara, and as far north as Monterey County. The weather is mild by the coast, so they would have worn very little in the way of clothing. Since the weather was mild there was more time for making jewelry, and other items of "luxury". The art that you see here would have been what they would have perceived as "luxury". It was not something that they Needed, just made life more pleasurable. What is a luxury you could not do with out?

Chumash Sun Symbol

When we were visiting San Luis Obispo I took this photo at the Mission. This is the ancient sun symbol created by the Chumash Indians that once inhabited the area of San Luis Obispo. It has long been said that the rings around the center circle represent pregnancy. The spirals are all over the world. Which is fascinating in itself. These circles are sometimes called primitive sun symbols as well.

Surya is one of the Indian Sun Gods. This one is from North Eastern India. Notice the cute little moustache, and the elongated eye brows. It is believed that the Iranians brought Sun worshipping to the Indian people. His third eye area is very interesting in itself.

A New Day

This little image is something I made for the art program that I teach for our school. I am not an artist. I am an art historian. I also wanted to share with all of you the same thing I shared on my other blog. Terra Del Sole. It is my more personal blog. I will get back to my usual posts tomorrow. I thought maybe you want to have some history of what my SUN posts are all about, and how they started.

So, I have not been around the last couple of days because I have been recovering from our family sadness. We have gone through our second round of paying for inspections, appraisals, and the emotional investment. It is heartbreaking.

The eighth we were suppose to close on our second deal. We even agreed to allow the guy to stay through the holiday season. He would just rather see his house foreclose rather than give his wife the child support he owes to her. Since we ask that an easement be cleared off the title his agent did not pursue the contingency. The property is worth less money with an easement running through the front yard.

I am confident that we are going to find the right piece of land for us. I think for now we are just going to relax and allow our agent to gather some other alternatives for us. I hope that third time turns out to be the ONE. If the third is not the one I guess it is just not meant for us to have a ranch with our museum.

We have learned lots of lessons during our search. Really, really, really, go with your gut. Be careful with the agent that you choose. Don’t choose one that works for both sides. We learned that one the hard way.

Many banks can do the same thing a “broker” can do for you. We lost thousands of dollars believing that a “broker” could do something extra. UGH!

Today, I cleaned and thought...my New Years Resolution was to become a better person, so I know how I can share with you a little more everyday how I am becoming a better person. At the end of every blog I will end with a sentence of what I did for the day to help my mind, body, and soul. I have a little book to keep my log of my little steps toward a better mind, body, and soul.

One of my favorite authors is Plato. I loved that he was what I believe to be a Great teacher. He believed that Mind, Body, and Soul each had to be nourished. Learning, by asking questions, playing games, and enjoying the adventurous journey toward wisdom.

Gymnastics is what we refer to as Physical Education. Thousands of years ago people knew that living healthy made you a better person. The fountain of youth is through movement.

The soul is our spirit it is different things to all of us. Or maybe it is that the words we choose for IT are different but fundamentally it is the same. The essence of our beings. Part of our personality, something that is at the core of our very being, and transcends this universe or existence.

So why do I want to find our “Terra Del Sole” , and why the obsession about the sun. Well, since I was young I have been collecting celestial sun images. I have always been fascinated with art of the sun through time. I am convinced that the very first religion was all about the sun. There is evidence that very early people all over the world had a God or Goddess as the sun. Then throughout time we have not lost our link to the FIRST religion. Many religions have retained some (sometimes settle) aspect of the sun. Royalty has for ages retained a link to the sun, and linking themselves to a greater REIGN than their own. Today, many products still use the sun symbols in their logo or brand. It is so primal, so necessary for our existence, and so NOW. We are coming full circle in our knowledge quest...the sun was vitally important for early people, and today we are realizing that the sun has so many more potentials that we are tapping into again.

When we went looking for our ranch I was reading another book about the Medici family. Cosmio had a Villa and country town named he named “Terra Del Sole”. One of the places we loved had a door knocker that is a sun. We loved the name, and we want our ranch to be varied. One thing we have learned about ranches, farms, and country life in general is you have to vary your farm. (I will tell more about this another time.)

My husband has not been feeling well. He has had this stomach thing for a long time. We had him all checked out about 2 years ago. His mother and grandfather died of stomach cancer, so I have been worried. He is not ready to go back to the doctor, and it is had to see your husband heartbroken and feeling so sick.

This is another reason I just want to kinda hang out, and let our agent find something suitable for us. Something that does not have a long escrow and end in sorrow for us. I have tried to lift my spirits by buying stuff I don’t need apothecary jars, art, and vintage posters from Italy. So today is a cleansing day...stop my ebay purchases after I pay for the items I win. Maybe once my husband sees that I am improving me that he will want to help himself.

Eye of God Example 1 Ancient Egypt

This is an Egyptian Eye of Horus. One can see how an eclipse with a little imagination could reveal an eye of God to people.

There are images of "Eye of God" that have rays behind it, and some even have stars in the background with the rays of the sun. More evidence that the idea of the "Eye of God" began when someone saw an eclipse in the heavens. The image of an eye came to their mind, and we still utilize the symbol today. So, I think in the coming days I will post how we still utilize this more mysterious image today.

Solar Eclipse

This is a solar eclipse. Take a real close look at it. What do you think it looks like? It is believed that over the years early people looked at the sky and saw the solar eclipse as the EYE OF GOD. I can see it. Can you? It does have an eye appearance. The pupil in the center...the shape of the eye.

During the eclipse God was peeking in and checking out how things were going on earth. It seems plausible that early man would have a thought like this. They were observing the sky, and this must have seemed like proof to early man that God existed and was watching them.

I can almost imagine how surreal the experience would have been for the early people. Maybe even more so for the "common" people. I am sure that the educated (scribes, royalty, and scholars) knew of some records, but others had no idea what was going on at the time.

Extra Symbols

The Freemason's apron had a sun on the front, and the eye of God on the triangle at the bottom. I am sure this is part of a necklace. The eye of God is thought to originate in ancient times because of an eclipse. I will have to show you some examples, it is really fascinating. Seeing the evidence is so compelling.

One of the greatest pieces of information that I have come across recently has been what ancient doctors were preaching, fresh air, water, and sun is the best medicine. I recently read that more doctors are recommending that we get more sun during the day because vitamin D from the sun is better for us.

I am not a physician so always talk to your personal physician before you decide to burn yourself in the sun, and then blame me. I love being in the fresh country air, drinking real water (not from plastic), and doing some sun worshiping. I don't believe in overdoing it. Please be responsible for your own intake of anything.

Flag of Terra Del Sole

This is the flag of the very first "Terra Del Sole". This one exist in Italy. Cosmio was the one that founded the area, and named it. I have always loved the celestial image of the sun, and have a collection of items that are images of the sun (especially jewelry)

I thought I would have to start the year off with telling you where I got the idea. I was reading all about the Medici family when we started looking for "our place under the sun" it really grabbed the heart strings of the whole family, and we adopted the name. I am sure Cosmio got the name from Heliopolis (land of the sun in Egypt). We want to keep the Italian name since we are Italian (I am Italian in spirit, no real evidence YET). My husband is 100% Italian. Both of his parents are from Italy, and the rest of his family lives in Italy.

This site is all about the art history of images that are of the sun, and how they relate to other images of the sun in different areas of the world. These giant dogs are my 2 Cane Corso's (villa dogs or "courtyard") These dogs are Italian Mastiffs. They are so loving and super gentle. They rub against you like cats. They are super quiet when they are in the house. I have lost lots of beautiful pots on my patio. They play with my Terra cotta saucers like they are sleds. (we don't have snow). They take the saucer, and slide down the hill. These two are sisters, and we could not break them up so they have their own room in our home.
I love my art collection. I also have made several friends buying art, and this is why I review their work. I hope they can make a sell, and continue to do what they love to do. It is their passion, and I like to help any way I am able to do so.
I love getting closer to realizing our family dream of having a Tuscan House. This is a photo I took of a house in Northern California, but it looks Italian doesn't it?!
Grapes. I really don't eat grapes or rasins. YUCK! I do love WINE! I want to grow wine grapes and olives on our ranch. We want chickens, sheep, goats, and horses. I also have "red wiggler worms" (they eat garbage). We can have our museum on the ranch and have ag tours. Later when our museum has more visitors we can maybe donate some of our property to the museum itself. I would love to employ all kinds of people, and help promote farm life and Italian American influence on our way of life today.
Being close to the Ocean. I love living close to the Ocean and the mountains. This is a photo I took while we were on PCH 1. I hated the drive, but I love it that I never have to go this way again. Once in a lifetime was enough for me. I swear it was like riding a roller coaster you could not get off of for 2 hours.
I love researching my family history. What does a Water Mill have to do with it? Well, my great, gr, gr, gr grandfather took the rocks out of a river to build his house. He also built an Inn. I kid you not...he once had a lady named Mary that was pregnant come to stay at the Inn. This Mary did not have a husband, and the baby was a girl. My grgrgrgr grandfather took her into the house, and she became a member of the house. She worked as a maid, but her daughter grew up with the other children. He even built his own mill, and the saw mill became the center of town. He milled the grain, but he also made the cradles, and the coffins. As well as most of the other furniture for homes in the area.
I love my 2 little dogs. The white one is a Maltese, and the Yorkie is Gucci. Gucci is the one with the most personality, and she will boss around the Italian Mastiffs. She is only 5 lbs, and she puts her tiny paw up to their mouth. They are 95lbs and the other one is 92lbs.
This is my son. He is much older now, and I don't share any photo's of them at their current age just because I don't want people that don't know them to come up to them and act like they know them. In this photo he has his paper crown on his head. He wore his paper crown everyday for months. I had to make a new one if anything happened to the original. I am sure we went through at least 25. Everywhere we go people come up to us and tell my husband and I how great our children behave. We go to antique stores, art galleries, museums, special invitations to farms, vineyards, and orchards. We enjoy being with our children because it is so much fun for us. They are the sweetest! Thanks be to God for giving us such wonderful children!
This is my daughter. She is a little beauty queen. She is smart and just so filled with joy. I just love spending special moments with her. We take photos of her dolls, scrapbook, and enjoy making funny music videos of our own. We sing to popular music, and she sings lead. We make a video to send to my family back east. They are more often than not very funny! She is very girlie, and I just love that. Her birthday is coming up, and this is the first year she opted out of a party with her friends and just wants to spend time with the family. We have to go to build a bear workshop, Barnes and Nobel (always a must), and California Pizza Kitchen. I could not have imagined a better baby girl for me.

What I love more than anything is my marriage to my wonderful husband. We have been through so much in our marriage. His mother tried to dominate our marriage. We lived with her being right across the street from us for seven years. We rebuilt our house from the foundation up, and with small children. All of living in a house that was being remodeled. His mother got cancer, and she would not allow anyone but me to take care of her. She lived for a year after she had her stomach removed. We then had to pay the IRS loads of cash we did not have. We sold, sold sold so much. Finally as we are started to level out we now have a grand opportunity to have the dreams of our whole family come true. We are following our bliss, passion, and density. Living in San Luis Obispo is our dream. It will become our new LOVE as a family.

Son over the Sun

This is from the House of the Holy Sepulche. I can't help to point out that the sun is on the floor, and the Sun of God is over the sun. The pagans are no longer the dominate religion. God gave his Son for man, and he alone is the light of the world.

Oh I love how the play on words just shook things up. Images are what the "common" people knew. Most people did not know how to read, so images drove the point home. Even today we are very visual people. Art is very emotional for us. Some things we just love or hate. It illicits a response in us to our core. We still make snap judgements about people in an instant and don't even realize it. There is an unconscious judgement that we make and don't even realize it.

The Sun

Let me first say that I am a Catholic. Most Catholics I know already know that Christ was not born on what we deem "Christmas" Christmas comes from "The Mass of (for) Christ" It is more about the celebration of a season that we remember when a special child was born. A time and season that Jesus was a gift to this world, and we share meaningful gifts with each other. I do understand that for some people it has become more about how much more we can give to each other. The commercialization of Christmas has taken away from the simplicity that once defined Christmas. Capitalism and Christmas go hand in hand now, stores bet on what they will sell and what will not. The season can either make or break the stores we shop. What does all of this have to do with the sun? Let me tell you...

At one time Saturnalia was the festival that the Romans celebrated. It was the religion that revolved around the sun. The festival started on Dec., 17th and ended on 24th. The 25th was the longest day, and was known as the birthday of the unconquered sun. Or Sol Invictus. The early pagans gave presents to each other because the sun again rose and fell as they had hoped it would.

Is all of this to say that I am a pagan? No, in fact I believe that early Christians made this move and really saw Christ as the one that conquered the sun god. Christianity was a small fringe religion competing in a society that allowed for other religions. Christianity really did conquered the sun god...it did so politically, intellectually, and through all powerful images. Politically once it had taken over the holiday it basically had the pagans switching from their holiday to Christianity. Christianity had a great hold on people. We are seeing people willing to stand up, and be eaten by lions in the Colosseum. We see that people can are all equal in the eyes of God. God does not see you as a pauper or an aristocrat. He sees you as you are. Jesus has a real message of love to share with all people and he does so peacefully. (Yes, I understand that the "church" does not always do as Jesus did, but we are not perfect). Images, are everywhere. If you can't read, and you see Jesus over the sun. He is the Son of God. There is a great play on words too.

I think that so many other branches of Christianity get the wrong idea about Catholicism. Catholics were establishing Christianity when it was at it's infancy. I understand and accept that a pagan holiday was on December 25th first, but like so many other great civilisations one is built on another. It does not make me any less Catholic or Christian to admit this fact. It only makes me appreciate the tradition even more. I like knowing all the facts, and being an historian makes things that mush more interesting to me. I think the sun representation is more iconographic more than anything else. Our eyes are drawn to it, we look, we think.

I read recently that some Christians are trying to get away from saying anything about how the two religions are connected. I think this is a mistake. Why can't we just embrace our history, and just get on with it? My son goes to a Catholic school and they studied how the two are connected, and I thought it was great. Why sweep any of it under the rug? The rug only grows larger, and someone is going to fall and get hurt. These are my thoughts about it...What about you?

Mayan Sun Calendar

Mayan Sun Calendar. South America must be on my mind. This is an image of the Mayan Calendar. As you can see the ray of the sun on the outside, and the face in the middle. The Mayan had a very complicated system (complicated for me since it involves so much math). These people really understood the celestial heavens. They made maps, and recorded in detail the stars and planets they saw each day. What (if anything) happened that was relevant.

Inca Sun God

June 21st was the biggest festivity Inti Raymi or the Sun Festival. The sun was the most important Deity to them. I am unclear if they believed as the Mayan people...A Goddess gave birth to all the Sun, Moon, and stars.

Once the party was started a bread that was made of maize (corn) was offered to the people. Much like Christian Communion. Real blood from a Llama was offered as well. Black and white Llamas were the prime choice.

The Sun Temple was rumored to have a street that was paved with gold.

The Inca people found lots of gold and silver. The gold was believed to be the sweat from the sun. Silver was called the tears from the moon.

I have to tell you. I am a real History lover. I dual majored in History and Art History. Books about history are my favorites. I also like historical fiction. I appreciated real history woven into the story. I am not sure if it is because I am envious of the author doing the research in a beautiful library or what.

Genealogy is one of my hobbies and many lines I have gone back to the 1600's and some lines I have got back even further. I have found that I have ancestors from all over. Many of my people came over on the Mayflower, and a few years after it. I am going to print my ancestry tree, and do some comparisons. I am digressing...

This coat of arms is from the Cleves Family. Anne of Cleves was once married to Henry the 8Th. She was the fourth wife of Henry, and did not fight to stayed married to Henry when it was apparent that it was not going to be a happy marriage. Here we see the sun in the middle of the family coat of arms.

Egyptian Winged Sun

The Egyptian version of the winged sun. There are various renditions of the winged sun. The wings are those of Horus he is known as the Sun God or the Sky God. At one time Horus was both the God of the sun and the moon, but later he will only rein over the sun which is seen as superior over the moon.

Sometimes there is a depiction of the sun with an asp on each side of the sun. We will take a look at some of those images too.

You may recall that in other areas of the world people have created images of the sun "flying" across the sky in cart, carriages, and even barges. Isn't it all so interesting? It is to me.

Unique Sun Summerian

These images of the Ancient Middle East are the best I can do. I thought for sure Jordan would have had evidence of some sort of sun images, but I have so far not been able to find anything until there is an Italian influence in Petra.

This image is from the Ancient Middle East. As you can see it is a bird in full flight. In the center is the sun. A man is encapsulated in the center of the sun. I believe it looks like he is doing calculations about the stars. There are so many interpretations. He could also have his hands in a position of praise for the sun, or it could be he in a pose that is part of a ritual that would have been understood by someone of the time. We may never know, but it is so fun to speculate. There are just so many possibilities. I doubt that you would find a group of people that would concur with just one scenario. Go ahead and take a guess, and for those of you that are too clever to fool. Yes, this image is probably familiar. I will follow up tomorrow as to why it is so familiar.

Celtic Sun

Here is another Celtic sun with the inception of a cross. Each of the arms of the cross is very ornate. The whole cross is encircled with a wreath. Where have we seen this before? In the wheel motif. Round on the outside. The inside has 4 and 8 spokes. In the center is yet another decoration.

Sun Carriage

This is the next progression out of the wheel sun. You may notice that there are four spokes on the wheel. I am almost certain that there is another carriage that is in Russia depicting 8 spokes, and the horse is much more primitive. This horse is pulling the sun, and as you may know later we find that mythic figures (such as Helios) will be pulling the sun with the help of many horses.

Sumerian Sun

The Sumerian sun art is pretty prevalent. I will showcase some really great images of their people and the image of the sun. Since the Jordan area was one of the first "civilizations" as we understand them I thought for sure I would be able to find one, alas I was only able to find some in Petra. The ones in Petra are not as old as the ones the Sumerians portrayed.

In this relief we see a distinguished man stepping on the foot of the man he is slaying. His dress is different, so I would guess he is a foreigner. The prisoner is being stabbed by a huge dagger. The prisoner has his hands tied behind him. The sun watches on as the man is losing his life. Is the man unworthy of being shown with a head? The sun seems to have no real expression that we could definatly call sad, happy, or angry. It seems to be cold and distant. The sun does have a curious third eye(?). Is it an all seeing eye? Is it an early form of adding the triangle?

Irish Sun Cross

Mythical Ireland has suggested that this may be an early form of a clock...Well, we could reason that this much like many of the wheels that have been found are represented as dividing up the seasons. Could that be construed as a clock? Yes, it could...it divides time.

Neolithic French Sun Cross

This representation of the sun is also an early representation of the cross. The Neolithic people of France left this behind. It still looks close to the wheel symbol, just fewer spokes. This symbol will become a popular one, as I have many more symbols to share with you. The break in four equal parts may have been an acknowledgement of Knowing of season or at the very least understanding there are four distinctive seasons. These people were outside more often, and observers of the stars, and moon phases.

I wonder were males more likely to be out in the night air or were females...Females are more likely to get up to nurse the baby. Females were more often to get up and clean the baby or young child. Were men up in the middle of the night to observe the stars? Were men up to guard their woman from the dangers of nocturnal animals? If that is the case then the man and woman were probably talking to each other to keep each other company during the time she was feeding the baby or small child. I believe that during the time men and women were gathering and starting to farm they felt more equal, but once we began to enjoy eating meat and the men were together without the women the men developed a closer bond. As the bond of men got stronger they believed they were stronger since they were hunting.

It would not be feasible for women to join the ranks of hunting with men because of our menstrual cycle. We would also become more of a burden for the men with the children. The children would have to stay with us simply because we had to feed the children.

This is how I believe the world became more patriarchal. Hunting is what brought men closer as a brotherhood. We were out of the loop. Since the sun is so dominate, it became the symbol for man and no longer a symbol for the female. We still have the symbol for the earth, but our celestial body is now the moon. The moon is subordinate to the sun. Without the sun the moon would not shine...hmmmm. Boy, those man groups!? Who knew eating meat would bring on so many complications?!

Siberian Sun Wheel

The Siberian Sun Wheel is broken into eight pedals. These wheels have been found all over the world. Some dating back to 24,000 years ago. A time that has no evidence of wheels being used for carts but they do represent the sun. This wheel is made of ivory.

Later we find that a wheels of a chariot takes the sun across the sky by Gods like Apollo.

Neo Lithic People of Malta

This is a pottery shard from the island of Malta. It was found at the Hagar Qim temple.

The temple was built in 3,300 BC. This shard represents the sun, as a sun wheel. It is divided into eight sections. The wheel often represents life. The passage of time (before clocks)

Malta is amazing. Although now Malta is surrounded by the sea at one time this was not the case. It would have been connected to Italy and Sicily. The sites at Malta are much like the ones found in Scotland, Ireland, and Stonehenge. All have a common mound like or cave structure. They all are aligned as calenders too, and they all have the spirals.

The spirals have stirred all types of speculation. One thing that is known for sure is that the spiral is an ancient representation of the sun. Sometimes there are more arms on the spiral than other times.

We often find that the spirals have 9 rings. This echos a pregnancy term. Women are like the earth and the sun...both bring fourth life. Women have "seasons" just as the earth and sun. At some point the woman changed from solar to lunar. We represent a reflection of the sun. Hmmmm, wonder why?

I am not some radical feminist, but I do think that it is not hard to imagine that at one time women were not a threat. We were seen as the more deified sex since we brought life into the world. We helped the young person sustain life by our bosom. We not only could help our own children but other children, and if need be, older people. We are "really" natural nurturing people.

I read (a long time ago) that we domesticated dogs by breast feeding them. We lured them with a little food, and they have never left our side. I think that is ironic...women domesticated dogs, but dogs are mans' best friend.

I digress...spirals have not been fully figured out as of yet. It may also be that some of the spirals were decorative, and some had more symbolic meaning. Since many primitive people used the spiral as a symbol for the sun there is always a possibility that as it became more popular people wanted to alter it a little.

I have a sincere appreciation for the people that lived over 5000 years ago and were building with stones that were over a ton in size, moving earth to build mounds...all to divide time. They were wanting to harness a relationship with the sun, moon, earth, and stars. It was an attempt to understand the earth they lived on, and grapple with the meaning of life. The mound is like a cave, a way for them to enter earth, the belly of the womb that brings forth food. This mound brings forth food, and sustains not only humans, but the animals around all of us too. I have seen where they have not only one sun but many. I have often wondered if the reason they drew so many different sun was a way to "harness" the energy of the sun. Could they have drawn the sun in different phases?

I have always read that the ancient people believed in a barge transporting the sun. This would make sense to the ancient people that were near water to believe in this myth. The Ancient Egyptians are the only images I can find (thus far) of ancient people and the sun barge. It also looks as thought he moon is just under the sun. Two baboons are the escorts for the sun.

What else is known about the sun barges? A barge procession would take place for the dead. The barge of the dead would also be preserved for the afterlife. Many barges have been found in the tombs.

The Greek Vergina Sun

It was not standardized yet, it was a early form of the Sun of Vergina.

Alexander The Great

This is the coin I was referring to the other day. Alexander the Great is on one side and the other is the Vergina Sun. On some of the ancient Macedonian Sun Symbols there is a flower in the center. Many people think flowers are often depicted as the sun for a more "stylized" look. The Mayans did just that, a human with a flower is the most warm scene I could find.

This is the modern flag of Macedonia. This one is only half of the ancient one, and is known as the Vergina Sun. Greece and Macedonia are embroiled in a controversy about the Vergina Sun. Both want to use it, and both claim it as their very own. I believe that I have seen a coin with Alexander the Great, and the sun symbol on it. The Greek passport watermark is the sun symbol. I did not know that anyone had a right to the symbol of the sun since it is so ancient, and found in almost every culture in some sort of depiction.

Maya Sun Glyphs

This is a glyph from a Mayan Calender. The sun is represented as different glyphs, but this one is pretty prevalent. A human face with a flower that more than likely blooms in the sun. In fact in some cultures it is a flower that represents in the sun.

When I look at ancient art or languages I often ask myself...Why is this representation the best way to express the most passive sun? A man instead of a creature, a flower in front of the face of the human.

It has no ray's around it, but this is "sun" to the Mayans.

The first know Monotheist Ahkenaton. He worshiped the sun. Moved the capital. He is usually shown as a more feminine male. He is often shown with a slightly swollen abdominal area. There have been speculation on the topic. I have often wondered if he is making a statement to his people that he is the embodiment of a female on earth carrying the seed of new life from the sun.

I have read that some believe that the Sun King is deformed as a result of inbreeding.

I just find it fascinating that so many cultures world wide have sun worshipping of some kind. I mean, when you think about it. If you are in an agricultural people you depend upon the sun. It brings you light, warmth, and without it there is no food. I am sure there were people that felt that the sun made them feel better. Feeling good can bring on a spiritual feeling. This is the Coat of Arms from the original Italian town. Terra Del Sole was a town that was founded buy Cosmio Medici. There is belief that the original town under it was a "Sole" town that the Etruscans founded before the Italians.

There have been many towns throughout history as "Sole" cities. Heliopolis was the city in Ancient Egypt, and throughout history the sun and theme has been utilized.

The sun burns a special place in my heart too, and it is our plan that our little place under the sun will be named Terra Del Sole to honor our Italian ancestors, and preserve our heritage here in the United States.

This Sun image is from France. Since the Sun King came to the throne as a boy, I am guessing that this image was cast during the time he was very young. The face does not have a mature feel at all. Selene Helius

Villa Selene Helius is the Mosaic that is portrayed here. He is rising AS the sun with his chariot leading the way. Throughout history we have had several that have thought of themselves as Sun Kings. Louis XIV was our last to call himself a Sun King (that I know of). His reign lasted more than 70 years. This is a beautiful depiction of a face of a human as part of the sun. Take a look at the rays around his head. Curly (more wavy) flowing out away from his face. He has shown us that he too has a connection to Gods, much the same way other Kings have linked themselves to a God.

Helius of Rhodes

This is a coin from Rhodes. One side is Helius, the Sun God. You can see the hair surrounding him is exaggerated by the waves of his hair imitating the rays of the sun. The other side is a flower. I believe that it looks like a Lotus flower, but others may draw another conclusion all together.

Ra the Egyptian Sun God was around many years before Apollo. Here he stands with the sun on his head. This sun does not have a face, but here we have a face of falcon (?) holding the sun.

Here we have Apollo as the Sun God. Instead of a generic face we have a human look. This is the usual representation of Apollo with a long face, and curly hair. Narrow nose, and full lips. Apollo is sometimes shown driving his chariot, as he is the one that brings the sun to us mortals.

Lapis and Gold

This is one of my earrings. It is made of Lapis and Gold. The face of the sun on this earring is a happy one. It has the classic look and feel that I adore. I believe that these earrings are from Italy, so it would explain the magnetism that I felt for them before I purchased them.

This is the sun on our Grandfather clock. It rolls around once a month. It alternates between a moon and a sun. This is not a clear photo, but it is in an area in the house that is hard to photograph at different times of the day.

Italian perfume bottle topper

This is a topper to a perfume bottle that is from Italy. I bought this bottle from e-bay several years ago. I have never seen anything like it before, and I have a small collection of perfume bottles from around the world.

Covering with the Sun

This is my blanket. I have had this thing since the early 1990's. I still remember the first time I saw it in "linen and things". I had to have it. I did not have very much disposable income at the time. I was in school, and every penny counted. I think this was an expensive blanket that was really more of a luxury, and not something that I "NEEDED". I admired it for a little while, and finally saved just enough for it. I am glad I kept it. I think one time it was in the "give away" pile, but this is one of my favorite symbols. An old fashioned celestial sun.

Italian Water

I love the image on the water bottle of Sole. I have not had this brand of water, but I have tasted many different types of water. I have never even seen this on in any grocery store in the United States. Apparently you can order a case at a time, and they are in glass bottles instead of plastic. I do prefer to have my water out of glass or stainless steel.
